We have heard of Almonds as memory boosters.  There are other nuts, herbs, fruits, vegetables that also help improve your memory. Fish and honey are also useful. The best news is that Tea is a helpful drink. Those who drink tea regularly in the morning and afternoon never forget to have their cup of tea !

5 Foods To Remember For Better Memory

The art of memory, or Ars Memorativa in the Latin, has fascinated us since well, I can’t quite remember. From the ancient Greeks to early Christian monks, scholars have employed a number of mental techniques in training their minds to keep track of the burgeoning field of human knowledge. Nowadays however, there seem to be so many more things to keep track of. Not only is the overall amount of human knowledge growing at an exponential rate but each of us is expected to memorize a dizzying array of minutiae. From what floor our dentist office is on, to an average of seven passwords and PIN numbers per person, we use our memories more than ever before. It should come as no surprise however, that those clever ancients were willing to put their memory where their mouth was.
Here is a fistful of five foods for the memory which are both respected by science and revered by the ancients.

One: HERBS

One of the most famous memory-enhancing herbs is rosemary. The motto of the plant has long been 'rosemary for remembrance' and now modern science knows why. Rosemary is rich in the anti-oxidant, carnosic acid which dilates the cerebral vascular tissues. Studies have shown that even the smell of rosemary can improve memory performance in office workers. Other herbs that may help memory include 'the three Gs': ginko, ginseng, and gotu kola. No one is sure how they work quite yet but we do know they stimulate the brain’s neurotransmitters.

Two: TEA

Another food with a long pedigree and which seems to have many benefits on the brain is usually served as a beverage, tea. About 5000 years ago the inventor and Chinese emperor Shen Nung discovered that the combination of a certain wild leaf in hot water produced an invigorating beverage. He called it 'cha' from the Chinese word meaning 'to investigate', a word which we now know as chai or tea. Tea’s benefits may spring from its healthy combination of anti-oxidants and caffeine. According to a study by the University of Limburg in the Netherlands, 'the most important consequence of [caffeine’s] adenosine antagonism' might lead to improvement of higher cognitive functions, particularly memory.'The antioxidants in tea are called polyphenols which have repeatedly been shown to improve cognitive function and memory. Tea also contains a calming amino acid called theanine which helps reduce 'the jitters' and keeps the mind relaxed and focused. Perhaps the best news is that tea has up to 10X the polyphenols found in foods like fruits and vegetables.

Three: FRUITS & VEGETABLES

Let’s not knock our friends, fruits and vegetables, however. Man cannot live (or learn) on herbs and tea alone, we need food.  The thing to remember about memory boosting foods is color. You want dark reds, blues and greens. Apples contain quercetin which protects against memory loss. Blueberries (and red beets) have another great anti-oxidant called anthocyanin which performs the same function. Red onions and grapes contain both. Combine red and blue and you get the purple of eggplant, a food rich in nasunin which protects the lipids in our brain tissue. Dark green vegetables like broccoli, spinach, brussels sprouts and romaine lettuce are high in folic acid which several studies have show to prevent and even reverse memory loss.

Four: FISH & NUTS

Sushi, anyone? The omega-3 fatty acids found in fish (and nuts) are great for the brain. Sea swimmers like mackerel, herring, eel and tuna are also chock full of phosphatidylserine. You don’t have to remember these fancy chemical names, just remember that these oils contain nutrients that are not made in the body, so it’s important to eat plenty.

Five: DESSERT

Honey is a delightful sweet that every culture in history has enjoyed. The sweet product made by bees from flower nectar has been used for thousands of years in food, medicine and even religion. Now, based on a study by the University of Waikato in New Zealand, honey might start being marketed as the next liquid gold for the brain. This research suggests that a diet sweetened with honey could both lower anxiety and improve memory. What an excellent excuse to not skip dessert.

It may not be entirely scientific to suggest, but a nice cup of tea and a slice of honey-soaked baklava (containing omega-3 rich nuts of course) might be the perfect pre-study snack after a healthy dinner.

Overall, it appears that a good memory might not just be the result of what you put in your eyes and ears but what you put in your mouth as well.

Turmeric used to kill cancer cells

Turmeric powder  (हल्दी / हळद)is a common item in Indian cuisine. In Maharashtra it is an essential ingradient of (फोडणी /तडका), so is used soaked in oil, as suggested. It is a known antibiotic and is being applied on a wound as a First aid. It helps in stoppage of bleeding and forms a protective cover. It is also consumed with milk or honey as a cure for soar throat. However, I had not heard of its anti-cancer properties given in this post.

Scientists have found a very unusual potential cancer-fighting technique: nanoparticles that carry curry into cancer cells. Specifically the particles were filled with curcumin, a compound found in curry.
The research by scientists from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Austria was published in the Journal of Nanobiotechnology on Dec. 6.
Curcumin comes from the turmeric plant, which is commonly used in daals and other curries, and known for its distinctive bright yellow powder.
We already knew that curcumin works as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. Other research has shown that when curcumin is absorbed by tumor cells, it stops the cell's growth cycle eventually killing the cell.
The trick is getting the curcumin into the cancerous cells.
Curcumin does not easily dissolve in water, so cells are unlikely to absorb the compound on their own. That's why simply eating lots of curry won't fight cancer. So the researchers packed the curcumin into tiny fat blobs called emulsomes. Emulsomes have a solid core of fat surrounded by a lipid layer that cells absorb easily.
The researchers packed curcumin into the middle of these emulsomes and dubbed them "CurcuEmulsomes." They tested the effectiveness of CurcuEmulsomes by exposing them to cancer cells in the lab. The cells successfully absorbed the CurcuEmulsomes. As the outer emulsome dissolved, the curcumin was slowly and steadily released into the cells.

The Effective Sweet Treat that Relieves Arthritis Pain

This may help us with pains & it is enjoyable too

Some of you know that I have osteoarthritis stabalised by knee exercises  and Glucosamine and Condrontin for the last 8 years while a few of my peers  had knee replacement during this time. Last November I went to Hanoi Bay  and did quite a bit of climbing that aggravated the pain in my right knee  and started the pain in the left. Still I persisted with my medication and  knee exercises. It gave relieve up to 70%.

One of my favourite fruits is pineapple. I realize that for weeks since my  trip to Hanoi I have not eaten any pineapple. I really missed that so went  out to purchase one. Walloped one big piece heartily. Lo and behold, next  morning when I started my exercises, the pain was nearly gone. There was  around 95% relieve. Thinking it was the benefit of the exercises I increased the momentum another 5 to 10 minutes.

Later in the day I began to think how could the pain decrease so much  overnight. Aha. only difference was the pineapple that I ate. Yes you guessed it, I went and walloped some more and obtained more relieve . Back to before I went to Hanoi Bay. Happy but too shy to tell anyone until my sister rang up to inform of her back ache and unable to stand straight. Rebuked her for not doing anything like rubbing ointment or seeing a Dr. Jokingly informed her of my pineapple experience. Laughingly she said she was going to try that. A week or so later she came over and proudly showed me that she could walk straight without any pain. With thumb up she informed that the pineapple worked.

So friends if you or anyone you know have arthritis pain, pineapple is worth the try. I dare to inform you after receiving this e-mail.

* The Effective Sweet Treat that Relieves Arthritis Pain*
By Jim Healthy On  October 19th, 2012
------------------------------------------

Did you know that there are certain kinds of foods that actually help reduce or even stop arthritis pain?
These "superfoods" are usually easy to find and inexpensive.
Of all the foods that help fight against arthritis -- delicious, sweet pineapple comes up close to the top of the list.

 *THE SWEET PAIN RELIEVER

For generations, people around the world have used fresh pineapple to ease their arthritis inflammation.
Loaded with joint-protecting vitamin C, pineapple is undoubtedly a superior arthritis-healing food.
Its anti-inflammatory ingredient -- bromelain -- is so potent that many boxers drink the juice after fights to heal their bruises.
A 1960 study compared boxers who took bromelain with those receiving a placebo. In just four days, an amazing 78% of those taking bromelain were inflammation-free, while only 14% of the control group had recovered.

Other than bromelain, pineapple also contains manganese, which strengthens bones and protects joints.

Here are 5 reasons you should be indulging in this delicious fruit if you struggle with joint pain and arthritis:

 *Reason #1: Joint Protection*

Higher intake levels of the antioxidant vitamin C is essential for people with arthritis...And just one cup of pineapple has a whopping 94% of the recommended daily allowance (RDA)!  Research published in the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases showed that vitamin C-rich foods protect against inflammatory polyarthritis, a type of
rheumatoid arthritis in which two or more joints are affected. If you have osteoarthritis, you may be concerned by warnings that you should not increase your vitamin C intake. But know that those warnings are based on a 2004 study on guinea pigs! Studies on humans show vitamin C actually reduces pain, cartilage loss and disease progression.

 *Reason #2: Healthier Joint Tissue*

Pineapple is a great source of the trace mineral manganese. Manganese is absolutely essential for building healthy joint tissue and dense bones. One cup of pineapple provides 128% of the RDA for manganese. Research shows that manganese tackles free radicals that can damage joint cartilage.
Tip: It's best to eat your pineapple raw. Fruit skewers alternating fresh pineapple chunks with strawberries is a great way to do that. Grilled and cooked pineapple is extraordinarily tasty too.

 *Reason #3: Smoother Joint Movement*

Pineapple's enzymes literally clean up "rusty" joints. When you eat pineapple on an empty stomach, the enzymes go right to work on your joints.
Tip: If you eat pineapple with other foods, the enzymes divert their activity to digesting the rest of your meal instead of the gunk in your joints.
So keep pineapple around for between-meal snacks. Juice the hard inner core
as well to take advantage of the concentrated bromelain located there.

 *#4: Pain Relief*

For optimal arthritis pain-relief, eat fresh pineapple. The bromelain in pineapple is destroyed by heat, so fresh pineapple will give you the most benefit.
Frozen pineapple retains active enzymes, but canned fruit and commercially processed juice don't provide the anti-inflammatory benefit of fresh fruit. It's important to note bromelain causes anti-clotting activity...
So you should consult with your physician before combining pineapple with blood-thinning medications such as warfarin (Coumadin), heparin, or aspirin.
Tip: If the fruit needs to ripen, keep it on your kitchen counter for a couple days. You'll know it's sweet and ready to eat when the bottom softens a bit.

 *Reason #5: Protection from Inflammation*

Pineapple's bromelain halts inflammation. The sulfur-based enzyme bromelain in fresh pineapple is one of the best-researched natural anti-inflammatory agents around.
Bromelain clobbers inflammatory agents that trigger joint pain and cartilage degeneration.
A 2006 study cited in Clinical and Experimental Rheumatology found that supplemental bromelain is effective in easing discomfort from hip arthritis.
The Arthritis Foundation stated that pineapple's bromelain produces effects comparable to NSAIDs for relieving pain and inflammation.
UK researchers reviewed ten studies on osteoarthritis and bromelain. They found that every single one confirmed bromelain's benefits.

Tip: Most of the bromelain in pineapples is found in the core and the stem. So don't throw away that tough, fibrous core!

Just chop it up, throw it in a blender with some water and pulse to convert it to juice.

It's a common habit of many people, especially if they expect some call when they are asleep or depend upon the wake up alarm in the mobile.
There have been innumerable clarifications about the amount of radiation emitted by the cell phone being very small and apparently harmless. At the same time there are also innumerable accusations that no radiation is absolutely safe.  I do not understand how a mobile phone can emit radiation when it is not active, not having any conversation.
Still why take chances by keeping it under your pillow?  However, there is a chance of misplacing or losing it, unless you keep it at a safe but easily approachable place.

The Human Body is a treasure trove of mysteries, one that still confounds doctors and scientists about the details of its working. It's not an overstatement to say that every part of your body is a miracle. Here are fifty facts about your body, some of which will leave you stunned... Or...

1. It's possible for your body to survive without a surprisingly large fraction of its internal organs. Even if you lose your stomach, your spleen, 75% of your liver, 80% of your intestines, one kidney, one lung, and virtually every organ from your pelvic and groin area, you wouldn't be very healthy, but you would live.

2. During your lifetime, you will produce enough saliva to fill two swimming pools. Actually, Saliva is more important than you realize. If your saliva cannot dissolve something, you cannot taste it.

3. The largest cell in the human body is the female egg and the smallest is the male sperm. The egg is actually the only cell in the body that is visible by the naked eye.

4. The strongest muscle in the human body is the tongue and the hardest bone is the jawbone.

5. Human feet have 52 bones, accounting for one quarter of all the human body's bones.

6. Feet have 500,000 sweat glands and can produce more than a pint of sweat a day.

7. The acid in your stomach is strong enough to dissolve razor blades. The reason it doesn't eat away at your stomach is that the cells of your stomach wall renew themselves so frequently that you get a new stomach lining every three to four days.

8. The human lungs contain approximately 2,400 kilometers (1,500 mi) of airways and 300 to 500 million hollow cavities, having a total surface area of about 70 square meters, roughly the same area as one side of a tennis court. Furthermore, if all of the capillaries that surround the lung cavities were unwound and laid end to end, they would extend for about 992 kilometers. Also, your left lung is smaller than your right lung to make room for your heart.

9. Sneezes regularly exceed 100 mph , while coughs clock in at about 60 mph.

10. Your body gives off enough heat in 30 minutes to bring half a gallon of water to a boil.

11. Your body has enough iron in it to make a nail 3 inches long.

12. Earwax production is necessary for good ear health It protects the delicate inner ear from bacteria, fungus, dirt and even insects. It also cleans and lubricates the ear canal.

13. Everyone has a unique smell, except for identical twins, who smell the same.

14. Your teeth start growing 6 months before you are born. This is why one out of every 2,000 newborn infants has a tooth when they are born

15. A baby's head is one-quarter of its total length, but by the age of 25 will only be one-eighth of its total length. This is because people's heads grow at a much slower rate than the rest of their bodies.

16. Babies are born with 300 bones, but by adulthood the number is reduced to 206. Some of the bones, like skull bones, get fused into each other, bringing down the total number.

17. It's not possible to tickle yourself. This is because when you attempt to tickle yourself you are totally aware of the exact time and manner in which the tickling will occur, unlike when someone else tickles you.

18. Less than one third of the human race has 20-20 vision. This means that two out of three people cannot see perfectly.

19. Your nose can remember 50,000 different scents. But if you are a woman, you are a better smeller than men, and will remain a better smeller throughout your life.

20. The human body is estimated to have 60,000 miles of blood vessels.

21. The three things pregnant women dream most of during their first trimester are frogs, worms and potted plants. Scientists have no idea why this is so, but attribute it to the growing imbalance of hormones in the body during pregnancy.

22. The life span of a human hair is 3 to 7 years on average. Every day the average person loses 60-100 strands of hair. But don't worry, you must lose over 50% of your scalp hairs before it is apparent to anyone.

23. The human brain cell can hold 5 times as much information as an encyclopedia. Your brain uses 20% of the oxygen that enters your bloodstream, and is itself made up of 80% water. Though it interprets pain signals from the rest of the body, the brain itself cannot feel pain.

24. The tooth is the only part of the human body that can't repair itself.

25. Your eyes are always the same size from birth but your nose and ears never stop growing.

26. By 60 years of age, 60% of men and 40% of women will snore.

27. We are about 1 cm taller in the morning than in the evening, because during normal activities during the day, the cartilage in our knees and other areas slowly compress.

28. The brain operates on the same amount of power as 10-watt light bulb, even while you are sleeping. In fact, the brain is much more active at night than during the day.

29. Nerve impulses to and from the brain travel as fast as 170 miles per hour. Neurons continue to grow throughout human life. Information travels at different speeds within different types of neurons.

30. It is a fact that people who dream more often and more vividly, on an average have a higher Intelligence Quotient.

31. The fastest growing nail is on the middle finger.

32. Facial hair grows faster than any other hair on the body. This is true for men as well as women.

33. There are as many hairs per square inch on your body as a chimpanzee.

34. A human fetus acquires fingerprints at the age of three months.

35. By the age of 60, most people will have lost about half their taste buds.

36. About 32 million bacteria call every inch of your skin home. But don't worry, a majority of these are harmless or even helpful bacteria.

37. The colder the room you sleep in, the higher the chances are that you'll have a bad dream.

38. Human lips have a reddish color because of the great concentration of tiny capillaries just below the skin.

39. Three hundred million cells die in the human body every minute.

40. Like fingerprints, every individual has an unique tongue print that can be used for identification.

41. A human head remains conscious for about 15 to 20 seconds after it has been decapitated.

42. It takes 17 muscles to smile and 43 to frown.

43. Humans can make do longer without food than sleep . Provided there is water, the average human could survive a month to two months without food depending on their body fat and other factors. Sleep deprived people, however, start experiencing radical personality and psychological changes after only a few sleepless days. The longest recorded time anyone has ever gone without sleep is 11 days, at the end of which the experimenter was awake, but stumbled over words, hallucinated and frequently forgot what he was doing.

44. The most common blood type in the world is Type O. The rarest blood type, A-H or Bombay blood, due to the location of its discovery, has been found in less than hundred people since it was discovered

45. Every human spent about half an hour after being conceived, as a single cell. Shortly afterward, the cells begin rapidly dividing and begin forming the components of a tiny embryo.

46. Right-handed people live, on average, nine years longer than left-handed people do. This is largely due to the fact that a majority of the machines and tools we use on a daily basis are designed for those who are right handed, making them somewhat dangerous for lefties to use and resulting in thousands of accidents and deaths each year.

47. Your ears secrete more earwax when you are afraid than when you aren't.

48. Koalas and primates are the only animals with unique fingerprints.

49. Humans are the only animals to produce emotional tears.

50. The human heart creates enough pressure to squirt blood 30 feet in the air.
